Sea World Says Film “Blackfish” is Misleading

Updated: 27 July 2013 07:59:16 AM

Sea World has publicly condemned the documentary film “Blackfish”, which was released on July 19th by Magnolia Pictures.

The documentary attempts to investigate the story of a 2010 incident at the marine park in which Sea World trainer Dawn Brancheau drowned while interacting with a killer whale during a performance.

“Blackfish” contends that the accident was preventable, and stemmed from the fact that killer whales should not reside in captivity.

However, Sea World says that the film is misleading and withholds key facts in order to further its arguments.

Movie Trailer

Sea World not only claims that “Blackfish” is biased, but also believes that the filmmakers exploit a “tragedy that remains a source of deep pain for Dawn Brancheau's family, friends and colleagues”.

Documentary

The documentary makes claims that killer whales develop aggressive behaviors when placed in captivity.

Sea World has come out to say that these claims are unfounded, and scientifically inaccurate.

The park’s investigation of the Brancheau tragedy infers that the killer whale, Tilikum, became distracted by the trainer’s ponytail.

Sea World goes on to contend that its treatment of killer whales and other animals at its parks is ethical and points out that is not just a marine park, but a leading zoological institution.

Sea World officials are undoubtedly displeased with “Blackfish”, which was released to select theaters across the nation on July 19th.

Statements from the park refuting points make in the documentary were sent to major film critics.

This in turn elicited another response from “Blackfish” filmmakers.

How mass audiences receive the film is yet to be seen.
