Snow White’s Scary Adventures is Closed

One of the original attractions at Walt Disney World, Snow White’s Scary Adventures was originally called Snow White’s Adventures.

Located in Fantasyland for more than four decades of providing entertainment for park guests, the Snow White attraction was based on Disney’s 1937 full-length animated feature film, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

When Walt Disney started his plans for Disneyland, it was an obvious choice for him to include Snow White as an attraction in his park; after all, without the commercial success seen by the movie, Walt Disney may not have had the financial means to follow through with his dreams for Disneyland.

Opened 1971

Snow White’s Adventures opened at Walt Disney World in 1971 and was one of the more popular attractions in the park.

In the early 1990’s the ride was shut down for some time and redesigned to include a few features that had been included in the version of the ride offered at Disneyland Paris.

The ride capacity of each of the gondolas was increased from four to six guests, which allowed more space for families to be seated together.

The name of the attraction was changed to Snow White’s Scary Adventures as a simple nod to the fact that a large part of this ride took place in the dark.

In the first incarnation of the ride, guests did not actually see Snow White during the ride, as the ride engineers had designed the ride to view the attraction through the eyes of Snow White.

This caused some confusion for a while, so the ride was reimagined to include images of Snow White.

Wooden Mine Cars

Wooden mine cars made up the guest cars for the Snow White attraction, as a nod to the fact that the Seven Dwarfs were miners, and guests on the ride followed the story of Snow White as she made her way through the Enchanted Forest.

On her journey into the Enchanted Forest, Snow White met up with the Seven Dwarfs, and also had the encounter with her wicked stepmother, the Wicked Witch.

The Wicked Witch was featured prominently during the original ride but depictions of her were scaled back significantly with the 1990’s redesign of the ride so that the story could feature more of Snow White, the Dwarfs, and the Prince.

Closed May 31, 2012

The ride was just under two and a half minutes, and it told the tale of Snow White as she made her memorable trip encountering the kindly Dwarfs, battling the Wicked Witch, and ultimately finding her true love, with whom she lived happily ever after!

Snow White’s Scary Adventures closed down on May 31, 2012 in order to make much-needed space for the upcoming Princess Fairytale Hall attraction that is a part of the expansion of Fantasyland.

Walt Disney World has plans to open up a new Snow White themed ride that will be related to the mines that the Seven Dwarfs mined for jewels.

It will unlikely be much like Snow White’s Scary Adventures, but it will be a nice way to continue including Snow White in some of the attractions at Walt Disney World.
